Job Posting #: 1 Job Category: Engineer Job Title: Protection Engineer Job Type: Full Time The role as Protection Engineer for Power System Design will involve, but not be limited to, the following:
- Preparation of detailed designs for Integrated Control and Protection (ICAP) applications in zone substations and transmission substations;
- Management and execution of technical and design components of existing projects and bids under preparation in the fields of HV electrical infrastructure for utility companies, industrial customers;
- Carry out commissioning of new installations where required;
- Assist with maintenance and fault finding on installations;
- Manage smaller projects in the specialist field of expertise;
- Carry out system studies and power system analysis using appropriate software tools;
The Protection Engineer’s role is a hands-on application of modern engineering practice in power systems development covering protection and control; civil and mechanical aspects; primary electrical plant covering circuit breakers, voltage and current transformers, surge arresters, transformers, high voltage cables and overhead power lines.
The Protection Engineer will have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Assistance with business development in the field of electrical infrastructure for utilities, industrial consumers;
- Timely execution and preparation(AutoCAD) of designs and design verification of existing projects;
- Timely preparation of tender designs with costing advice;
- Factory acceptance testing of designed ICAP systems;
- On site commissioning of protection and control systems and primary electrical plant associated with projects being completed in this field;
- Maintenance and fault finding on existing installations;
- Adherence to project budgets for design and commissioning;
- Controlling the flow of information and documentation between the Company and Clients, Suppliers and other related third parties;
- Maintaining an accurate filing administration system in relation to project design documentation and drawings; and
- Maintaining and updating the design office technical library.
Essential Skills and Qualifications The Protection Engineer will require the following skills and attributes:
- Suitable tertiary education in electrical engineering to degree or national Diploma (Technician) level;
- Detailed understanding of design and operation of modern protection relay technology and substation automation and its application through to commissioning;
- Detailed understanding of design of primary electrical plant in transmission and distribution substations;
- Detailed understanding design and operation of substation control systems through to SCADA systems;
- A working knowledge of the civil and mechanical engineering aspects of substations and overhead power lines;
- Ability to conduct and/or evaluate power systems from a load flow, stability and fault level perspective;
- Ability to carry out commissioning of modern protective relay and control systems in a “hands-on” way;
- Ability to lead a small design and commissioning team in the timely execution of a task under time and technical constraints;
- Ability to produce conceptual as well as detailed designs for Integrated Control and Protection (ICAP) systems based on client specified technical requirements; and
- Good people and communication skills and an ability to interact with internal and external parties.
